Chapter 12 Why?
The news that Carl might wake up quickly spread.
Naturally, the first ones to lose their composure was the Thornton family.
When Eliza heard the news, she was so shocked that she stood up from the sofa and exclaimed, “How could this happen?”
Clay replied, “It’s from the hospital; it can’t be false.”
At these words, Eliza’s face turned pale, and she dug her fingernails into her palm.
When Carl had his accident, she had tried to hurt herself and begged Sebastian before finally getting Edie, the unlucky girl, to marry Carl on her behalf.
To her surprise, just days after Edie moved into the Brooks family, news of Carl’s possible awakening came out.
Carl, handsome and the powerful head of the Brooks family, wealthy and influential—if he woke up, control of the Brooks family would return to him…
Eliza had missed such a good opportunity.
Clay felt a pain in his chest when he thought about how it was Edie instead of Eliza who had married into the Brooks family. He angrily said to Violet, “It’s all your fault. If only Eliza had married him!”
Violet, feeling jealous, too, said, “Who knew he would wake up?”
Such things were hard to predict.
Clay retorted, “If you hadn’t pampered Eliza, the title of Carl’s wife would have been hers by now!”
Unable to hold back, Violet said, “Even if Edie had married Carl, what good would it do? With Edie’s cold personality, no one would find her likable. Carl might divorce her as soon as he wakes up.”
Clay argued, “Carl has never been stingy. Edie has taken care of him for so long; the Brooks family values its reputation; even if they divorce, they won’t let Edie leave empty–handed; she’ll get something out of it.”
After pacing around the living room for a few times, Clay suddenly told Violet, “Contact Edie and ask her to come over for a meal.”
oye
Eliza weakly said, “But we’ve already cut off ties with her. Will she even want to come back?”
Clay confidently replied, “We still have more than twenty years of bond. Tell me, would she rather have a commoner as her mother, or would she be willing to return to the Thornton family and continue living a life of luxury?”
Eliza bit her lower lip and looked down to hide the jealousy in her eyes. ‘Edie… why?

Chapter 12 Why?
She stole twenty–three years of my life…‘
She had originally thought that it was finally her turn to have the upper hand and watch the show unfold, but who would have thought that because of Carl, Clay actually had the idea of wanting to acknowledge Edie again.
All Eliza’s scheming and maneuvering had been for naught.
She wished she could scratch Edie’s face off but still managed to force a smile and say, “Alright, I’ll try to contact her too.”
Edie had stayed up all night providing care and the next day received a call from Jefferson.
He said, “Mom is getting old and really can’t handle the fuss. Just let her move in.”
He was talking about the apartment; he himself had no plans to live there.
Edie responded, “I’ve been waiting for your reply. I’ll bring the keys over later.”
Jefferson knew she was busy. “I’ll come and get them.”
Hearing that, Edie gave Jefferson an address. She was indeed pressed for time.
As soon as she hung up, the door was pushed open without a knock.
It was Eliza.
Seeing only Edie there, her facial expression froze, thinking she might encounter someone from the Brooks family and had come to “show her kindness“.
Eliza asked, “Where is everyone? Why are you alone here?”
Edie questioned, “What are you doing here?”
Eliza answered, “I heard Carl has shown some signs of response. Mom and Dad sent me to check and also to ask you to come back for a meal.”
In reality, it was not so much an invitation for a meal as it was an attempt to get close
to Carl because of his reaction.
Edie directly challenged her, “Do they want to check, or is it you?”
Eliza never expected that Edie would not even put on a pretense and directly say it bluntly.
“You think you’ve won, don’t you?” she said with a sarcastic laugh. “Don’t forget he’s still just a vegetable. Whether he can actually…”
Before Eliza could finish her sentence, she saw Carl’s wrist on the bed move.
The movement was so significant that even the IV line connected to the back of his hand swayed several times.
