Chapter 22 The Great Escape
Carl was still dressed in those pajamas, looking just like the interview clip Edie had seen on TV before, except for a bit of pallor. His short illness hadn’t left any traces on him.
He was still the same decisive, cold, and aloof person everyone knew.
His pale face after his serious illness only made him look colder, and his words were enough to freeze everyone who had been bragging.
He added, “Looks like I slept too long, making you all so eager to see me dead that couldn’t wait to show your true colors.”
The Brooks family had deeply felt Carl’s iron fist.
As soon as they heard Carl’s tone, they started to tremble.
Theodore almost got on his knees, his mind blank. “No, no, no… I…”

Carl asked, “Uncle Theodore, what are you so afraid of? I thought I just heard someone say I’m ungrateful. Do you remember who said that?”
Theodore stammered, not even knowing what he was saying, “N–no, not you. I meant Fabian…”
Carl said, “Oh? So you are saying my father is ungrateful.”
Carl had just woken up and wasn’t strong, speaking softly but with a menacing undertone. “Uncle Theodore, you’re quite bold now, forgetting when your company was about to go bankrupt and I helped by lending 15 million dollars?
“We agreed you’d pay me back by Christmas, but then I had my accident.” He smiled, but there was no warmth in his eyes. “Isn’t that funny?”
Finally, Theodore couldn’t hold it anymore and collapsed on the ground in fear.
Carl continued, “I don’t have the energy to argue with you all. Get out of here.”
The relatives of the Brooks family, who were either there for the spectacle or hoping to get some benefits, almost scrambled away.
With unrelated people gone, only a few of them remained.
It was only when Carl’s gaze fell on Edie’s face that Edie’s breathing hitched.
Carl walked straight past the Brooks family members and stopped in front of her, pinching her chin to lift her face.
He stared for several seconds.
Edie thought Carl would ask who she was, but instead, he slowly said, “You…” He then suddenly collapsed into her arms as if drained of strength,
The last thought before Carl fainted was: So this is what she looks like. Indeed, not

Chapter 22 The Great Escape
A grown man like Carl crashed into Edie, almost knocking her over.
Fortunately, Fabian snapped out of it and quickly called for a doctor.
A flurry of activity ensued as they rushed Carl to bed for examination.
Edie was still dazed, frowning at why Carl had pinched her chin.
Carl was back to his previous state as if he had never woken up, with no change in his vital signs.
Carl’s sudden awakening brought both joy and worry.
Of course, Prunella and Edie were among those who were worried.
Upon hearing the news, Prunella’s immediate reaction was, “Oh my god! You spread rumors about him having a romantic relationship with you; has he come after you for that?”
Edie shook her head. “At that time, he was busy dealing with his bloodsucking relatives; how could he care about me? He just glanced at me, probably doesn’t even know who I am.”
She didn’t tell Prunella about Carl pinching her chin.
Prunella was more anxious than Edie herself. “Good, good, but I feel like Carl waking up completely isn’t far off. Shouldn’t you start planning your escape route?”
Edie rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “What escape route? Run away?”
Prunella sighed in exasperation. “Don’t you think you should get something valuable before you run away?”
Edie thought about it and agreed.
If Carl woke up and she, a young woman, suddenly became a twice–married woman,
that would be such a loss.
Edie decided, “Fine, I’ll go on a shopping spree and use Carl’s card.”
Prunella sounded approving. “That’s the spirit! Nothing beats having real money in
hand,”
