I actually laughed.
Just a second ago, he said he’d “try not to see Vanessa anymore.”
And now?
One call from her and he bolted out like the house was on fire.
Classic Eric.
Then it hit me-
Was that how it happened the day my girls died too?
I sat in their room a little longer.
Then I left.
That same afternoon, I found a small apartment near a local theme park through a realtor.
The balcony overlooked the park directly.
I used to take Sophia and Natalie there all the time.
That place held so many memories of us.
Living nearby made it feel like they hadn’t gone far.
I stood on the balcony, holding their urns, staring out at the flashing lights and faint music.
As I watched, old memories came flooding back.
“Mom! This place is amazing! I wish we lived closer,” Sophia had said, eyes sparkling.
“Why’s that?” I asked.
She tilted her head.
“Then we could come here anytime we want!”
Natalie grabbed my hand, her face lit up with hope.
“Can we move here, Mom? Please?”
I smiled and promised them,
“If you girls behave, we’ll move here next year. Deal?”

They squealed in excitement.
“Okay! We’ll be super good!”
“You’re the BEST mom in the world!”
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
“Sophia… Natalie… do you see this?”
“We’re here now. We actually live next to the park.
From here… we can see it every day…”
I broke down.
If only I’d moved here sooner-
maybe they could’ve had more days filled with laughter.
But now, none of it mattered.
I stood there until the sky turned black.
A sudden ringtone snapped me out of my daze.
It was a call from Eric’s mom.
I hesitated, then picked up.
“Emily, where the hell did you take Eric?”
“It’s late and he’s still not home!”
That’s when I realized–he didn’t even go back to his own house.
He’d been with Vanessa all afternoon.
So much for “I’ll be right back.”
I felt… nothing.
No anger.
No pain.
Just… emptiness.
I’d already made up my mind to divorce him.
He could stay with whoever he wanted, however long he wanted.
