Chapter 9
Later, she provocatively sent me a pregnancy test result.
“Thank you for letting me leave, Ms. Perez. Leland said it’s too hard for me to work while pregnant. I really appreciate your understanding. I hope you’ll be more sensible in the future.”
She followed it with a photo of their intertwined hands.
My breathing became rapid. I struggled to keep myself from losing control.
Despite my efforts, my nails dug into my palms.
I told myself not to get angry. I only had less than a month left before I could leave, didn’t I?
I stayed in the hospital for a week. My stomach condition improved a lot.
Leland worked during the day and took care of me at night, which must have been exhausting.
I admit I was addicted to relying on him. The thought of leaving stung my heart.
But he was slowly falling out of love with me, wasn’t he?
That day, I bought two cameras online. I secretly left the hospital and went back home.
After setting up the cameras, I started packing.
I buried all the photos of Leland and me, along with the happy memories we once shared.
I sold the Cherry Farmland, knowing my laughter would never echo there again.
I told Leland I was home and not to worry. He had Lara make me nourishing soup and reminded me to eat on
time.
That night, Leland sent a message saying he had urgent work and wouldn’t be coming home.
Caitlyn sent me photos of them spending the night at a hotel. She was sitting on the bed in a sexy nightgown. Another photo hinted at Leland in the shower.
I wasn’t stupid. What happened next was obvious.
This time, I stayed strong. I didn’t cry like I used to.
Since I was planning to leave, it was time to let go of someone who didn’t belong to me.
I decided to stop deceiving myself and face reality.
Today was Leland’s birthday. I finished packing and hid my belongings. The dreams I once had of a future with him had become a heavy burden.
I took a deep breath and wanted to leave them behind. Maybe I would never recall our past again.
I sat in front of the dressing table, smiling at myself in the mirror.
It was a long–lost confidence and relief.
I used my best makeup to hide the bags under my eyes from last night and put on a simple yet elegant outfit. I wanted to face my new life in the best possible state.
I had Lara prepare a table of exquisite dishes. I wanted to celebrate one last birthday with Leland.
It was not until ten o’clock at night that he finally stumbled home, completely drunk.
And it was Caitlyn who personally brought him home. When she saw me, she smiled proudly and went to his wardrobe to get pajamas. I was dumbfounded.
