Chapter 10
I was dumbfounded as I watched Caitlyn being so familiar with the placement of every item in my house.
Leland, looking uncomfortable, tugged at his tie and muttered in bed, “Kay, I love you.”
I felt nothing. Just as I was about to change his clothes, Caitlyn walked in with Leland’s pajamas, even holding his
boxers.
The boxers were stored in the far left drawer of the closet, and she grabbed them without hesitation as if she had been here countless times before.
I forced a slight smile, maintaining my composure as the lady of the house.“You’re no longer my husband’s secretary. You should leave, or I might have to call the police for trespassing.”
Caitlyn sneered, “Ms. Perez, you’re still so naive. Trespassing? So what? Even if you don’t want me here, I’ve come many times before.”
She pointed to the bed. “Here, the couch, the desk, the kitchen, all have traces of me and Leland.”
My stomach twisted as if someone were stabbing it with a knife. I clenched my fists, trying to stay calm.
I looked up at Caitlyn and walked up to her, carefully examining her.
She stepped back, visibly uneasy under my gaze.
I sneered, “My husband has good taste. At least you get a good shape. By the way, did he pay you enough? Are you here to ask me for a tip? After all, changing into so many outfits to please him must be exhausting.”
Caitlyn glared at me, her voice low and furious, “Kaylie, I’m not some cheap fling. What Leland and I have is real love! He doesn’t love you. He only sees you as a younger sister he raised. He loves me!”
I nodded, crossing my arms. “I wonder if Leland were to leave with nothing, would you still be so devoted to him?” Caitlyn got angry, “No way! Mr. Pearson, he was under 18 when…” She glanced at Leland and then covered her mouth, realizing she had said too much. She leaned closer. “If you have the guts, let’s take this outside.”
I scoffed, “Why should I go anywhere with you? What right do you have to even speak to me, Caitlyn?”
Caitlyn glanced at Leland, certain that he was still asleep, and then turned back to me, her eyes blazing.“What? Kaylie, you’re nothing but bad luck. You lost your parents and your grandparents. Who knows, maybe you’ll bring ruin to Leland’s career too. You’re just an unwanted jinx. Why are you being so arrogant?”
I couldn’t stand anyone talking about my parents and calling me a jinx.
“You’re asking for trouble,” I said through gritted teeth, stepping closer.
But Caitlyn kept pushing, unrepentant. “What’s the matter? If it weren’t for your parents forcing Leland to take care of you, do you really think he’d stay with you? Look at yourself. You’re a useless woman who can’t even keep a man. You probably just lay still during sex in bed.”
I snapped, “You’re disgusting. Only someone filthy would see everything as dirty.”
I struck her hard across the face with a bang.
