When I got back to the office, my resignation had already gone through.
“Emily, are you really leaving?”
My manager looked genuinely disappointed.
He knew how hard I worked.
“With your skillset, you’d be in my seat in under two years.”
“Walking away now… it’s a real loss.”
I shook my head.
“I know you mean well, but if I stay, I don’t see a future.”
This company belonged to Alexander Montgomery.”
‘There’s no way he’d let me go quietly.
My manager sighed, realizing I’d made up my mind.
“At least stay until the project’s finished. It’ll pad your résumé a bit more, and you deserve
the credit.”
I did the math–just one week left.
So I agreed.
In all my years here, Alexander never gave me a single favor.
No one even knew we were married.
But my manager–William–he’d always looked out for me.
Encouraged me. Treated me with respect.

In a way, he felt more like a mentor than a boss.
Before I left his office, I gave
n a deep bow.
“Thank you, William.”
He didn’t say anything. Just nodded, eyes glassy.
Back at my desk, I dove into the project files to catch up on everything I’d missed because of the wedding.
That’s when Chloe showed up.
She was now the new team lead–and had taken my place.
I didn’t really care. I was leaving anyway.
But she went a step further and tried to steal my entire project.
“Chloe, this project’s been Emily’s from day one.‘
“It’s almost finished,” William said, trying to reason with her during the meeting.
But Chloe didn’t care.
She just wanted to take everything from/me.
“Exactly,” she smiled sweetly.
“It’s almost done. Easier for me to wrap it up, right?”
“And let’s be honest, Emily’s been here long enough.”
“I’m sure she won’t mind letting go of one tiny little project.”
I forced a smile.
Tiny?

I looked her dead in the eyes.
William tried to help again.
“If you’re looking for a challenge, I’ve got a bigger, flashier project I could show you.”
My eyes widened.
He’d been building that project for a year.
He told me once–if it worked out, he’d get promoted twice over and be set for retirement.
And now he was giving it up–for me.
I felt my throat tighten.
Before William could offer it, I cut in,
“Take it, Chloe. If you want it that badly, it’s yours.”
Chloe’s eyes narrowed. She glanced between me and William.
“I’ve changed my mind,” she said with a smirk.
“I don’t want your crappy little project anymore. I want William’s.”
