Chapter 5
I sneered at the mention of the culprit who hit Marie. That person never showed up, not even once. It was only when I went to the police station to deal with the case that I found out the perpetrator, a woman, had been bailed out by a friend.
Before leaving, the two said they would settle the matter in court.
Outraged, I got in touch with a friend of mine who was a lawyer and asked him to help file a lawsuit against the culprit. Bewildered, he asked me why I wasn’t asking Zachary for help. After all, Zachary was considered one of the best lawyers in town. If he handled the case, there was no doubt he would ensure that the culprit got sent to prison.

Smiling bitterly, I scrounged up an excuse by saying that Zachary was busy with another case. I didn’t tell him that I couldn’t even get in touch with Zachary, nor did Zachary even believe that something had happened to Marie.
However, when the court proceeding took place three days later, my friend and I ended up running into Zachary and Gigi at the courthouse.
Gigi seemed extremely frightened. She stood close to Zachary, almost pressing herself completely against him. He didn’t push her away. Instead, he gently consoled her.
Perhaps the stares from my friend and me had been too pronounced. Both Gigi and Zachary looked up and were stunned to see us standing there, both dressed in formal attire.
“What are you doing here? You shouldn’t come here to make a scene!” Zachary snapped, his brows furrowed and his eyes flashing with disdain.
He probably thought I had come here on purpose to look for him, but I simply eyed him coolly before heading into the courthouse with my friend.
When Zachary saw which courtroom I was heading into, he ran over to block me.
“You’re the plaintiff? The ones who are trying to scam Gigi?” He quickly drew the dots together. “So, this is the case you were talking about when you said your mother got into a

car accident. Well, you can drop the lawsuit now, Annette!”

I glared at him in fury and retorted, “What kind of nonsense are you spewing? What scam? Why should I drop the lawsuit?”
However, Zachary assumed he was onto me and smugly replied, “Am I wrong? Wasn’t your mother just trying to scam her way into getting some money? She had been in poor health for some time now, hadn’t she? That was why she tried to resort to this to get some money to buy your brother a house.
“Well, unfortunately for her, it was Gigi she tried to scam, and Gigi has appointed me as her defense lawyer! You guys won’t be getting away with this, not with me around!”
A crisp sound rang out as I slapped him so hard his head flew to the side.
I could hardly contain the ball of rage burning within me. Once again, he was blatantly believing Gigi’s one–sided claims without even looking into the matter first! The nerve of her to claim that the accident was part of a premeditated scam!
As I stared at the face of the man I once loved deeply, I felt nothing but disgust.
“When did I ever say it was my mother who got into the accident, Zachary? It’s been days now. Have you visited your mother even once?” I questioned.
Clutching his cheek, Zachary looked a little panicked.
“Hey! What are you doing? How could you hit him?” Gigi cried out as she hurried over to defend Zachary.
“Don’t listen to her, Zach,” she said. “She knows how important your mother is to you. She’s just saying that to rattle you. Didn’t you tell me that your mother only leaves the house on weekends? The accident happened on a workday, so it couldn’t have been her. Once this is all over, I’ll accompany you to visit her, okay?”
Zachary looked touched, but when he turned back to me, his gaze was icy.
“You’re despicable, Annette! I would’ve fallen for your lies if Gigi hadn’t brought me back

to my senses. You and Uncle John already tried to put on an act to trick me the last time. I can’t believe you still have the nerve to curse my mother like that again! Just you wait. I won’t let you and your family’s scheme succeed!”
Zachary was raging at me, but I paid no attention to him at all. All I could think of was the memory of the white cloth being pulled over Marie’s lifeless body.
I never thought Gigi would be the culprit who killed Marie. I couldn’t stop myself from lunging at Gigi and choking her.
“Annette! Have you lost your mind?” Zachary roared.
He grabbed my arm and threw me aside, making me fall onto the ground.
