Chapter 4
Liam froze when he heard Jessie’s voice.
Before he could turn around, Briley suddenly clutched her chest.
“Liam. I feel terrible…”
The next second, she collapsed in front of him. Liam got into a panic.
“Briley! Briley!”
Jessie quickly walked up to them, but Liam held Briley in his arms and shoved Jessie aside before rushing off.
As he left, he only threw one sentence. “Handle the rest.”
Jessie had no choice but to stay at the police station with the lawyer, cleaning up Liam’s mess
As the night deepened, having barely eaten all day, her face grew paler by the minute.
When the lawyer finished up the final paperwork, Jessie’s vision blurred, and she collapsed to the ground.
Lying in the hospital bed, she felt dazed and exhausted. She tried to open her eyes, but no matter how hard she tried, her eyelids wouldn’t budge.
In her haze, she seemed to relive the days after Liam’s “death.”
Her hair had turned completely white overnight. She sat alone in their home, not eating or drinking, growing weaker by the day. Then a friend found her unconscious and rushed her to the hospital.

When the doctor told her she was pregnant, it had been the only thing that kept her living. But at six months, a car accident took even that last connection to Liam away from her forever.
She would never forget the face of the driver, one that looked exactly like Briley’s.
When Jessie woke up, the only person by her side was the lawyer, Joslyn Sherman.
“Mrs. Foley, I’m sorry, but I can’t reach Mr. Foley. I brought some oatmeal for you.”
Jessie slowly sat up. The memory of Liam carrying Briley away flashed through her mind, making her scoff.
“Thank you, Ms. Sherman. You can go now.”
After Joslyn left, she yanked out her IV and got out of bed. A nurse rushed over just in time to stop her.
“Why did you pull that out? Where’s your family?”
Jessie lowered her eyes. “I don’t have family.”
The nurse fell silent, then sighed and gently reinserted the needle.
Just then, the door opened again, and another nurse walked in, flipping through a chart as she said, “People really live such different lives! Look at Mrs. Foley in the VIP ward…
“She was just a little shaken up, and Mr. Foley called in a full team of specialists for an emergency consultation. Dragged them out of bed in the middle of the night! It must be nice to be his wife!”
Jessie wanted to laugh, but instead, tears welled up in her eyes.

Liam didn’t relax until seven or eight specialists confirmed that Briley was completely fine.
As his panic faded, he suddenly thought of Jessie.
Frowning, he called her, but after more than ten tries, there was still no
answer.
He glanced at Briley in bed, then grabbed his coat and slipped out of
the room.
Meanwhile, Jessie was making arrangements to sell her studio through a real estate agent.
“Ms. Shepard, these things seem really valuable. Why are you burning them?”
The agent stared in shock as she tossed one item after another into the flames.
Jessie’s face remained expressionless. She picked up a diary, which was the most unremarkable thing, and threw it into the flames without a second thought.
The fire roared higher, licking/at her hand. The agent hurriedly pulled her back.
“What are you doing?”
