Chapter 76: It is my concern
(Scarlett’s POV)
I clutched the documents tightly in my hand as I left my office. The sharp rustle of the papers sounded louder than it should have. Each step I took felt heavier, the weight of what they represented pressing down on me.
These papers would officially sever my ties with the Winter Pack. Permanently.
Hunter walked silently beside me, his steady presence a constant shield. His gaze darted around, always alert. Roman’s insistence on keeping him near irritated me, but I knew there was no point in arguing. Roman
had made it clear–it wasn’t up for debate.
We were just passing Grace’s treatment room when the air shifted. I stopped, my instincts flaring, as Alexander appeared in front of us, blocking our path. His expression was cold, his amber eyes flickering with
rage.
His gaze quickly swept over Hunter, narrowing as if evaluating the threat. Then, his eyes landed on me, burning with barely concealed fury.
“Scarlett,” he said, his voice rough. “We need to talk.”
Hunter shifted beside me, his body stiffening. I sighed and crossed my arms, keeping my tone even. “I’m busy,
Alexander. Move.”
But he didn’t. Instead, his lips curled into a mocking smirk, his attention returning to Hunter. “So this is the new shadow following you everywhere. A loyal lapdog, huh?”
Hunter didn’t flinch, didn’t react. His calm composure only seemed to irritate Alexander further.
“And you,” Alexander continued, stepping closer to me, “someone always in the center of chaos. Now you’re hiding behind him?”
I raised a brow. “Hiding? That’s a bold assumption. What do you want, Alexander?”
He ignored my question. “Word spreads quickly, Scarlett. The mighty Alpha stormed the Council’s detention center to play your knight in shining armor. Who is he, hmm? Who’s your powerful new ‘sponsor‘?” He practically spat the word out, his voice dripping with disdain.
My jaw tightened. The insinuation behind his words made my skin crawl. “Maybe try minding your own business for once,” I said coldly, trying to walk past him.
He stepped in front of me again, his looming presence stifling. “Oh, that’s not going to work today. You can’t shrug this off. You’re going to tell me who he is. Right now.”
“Miss Winters,” Hunter suddenly spoke, his tone polite and formal. “We should proceed. There’s no need to
delay.”
His deliberate use of my surname stru a nerve in Alexander. I could see his jaw tighten, his eyes narrowing
dangerously.
“Miss Winters, is it?” Alexander mimicked in mockery, his voice low and venomous. “Look at you now. All formalities. Tell me, Scarlett, what kind of deal did you make? Trading your loyalty for protection? Or is it

something else entirely?” His eyes darkened, his tone full of malice.
I could feel Hunter’s tension beside me, though he kept his face calm.
“Step aside.” Hunter’s voice was sharper now, his aura radiating quiet authority.

Alexander didn’t care. His hand shot out, grabbing my wrist in a vice–like grip. “Where do you think you’re
going?”
I didn’t even have time to pull away. Hunter moved faster.
In a blink, Alexander was slammed against the wall. The impact reverberated down the hallway, the cracked
stone standing testament to Hunter’s strength.
Hunter’s voice was low, cold, and terrifying. “Touch her again, and I’ll break more than your arm.”
Alexander snarled, his wolf Mason rising to the surface. Despite his broken arm still healing from Roman’s
earlier attack, he shoved Hunter back, throwing punch after punch.
Hunter dodged effortlessly, his calculated movements outclassing Alexander’s wild aggression. The sound of
their fight echoed around us–fists meeting flesh, snarls reverberating off the walls.
Alexander managed to land a solid hit to Hunter’s side, causing him to stumble slightly. But the Beta recovered instantly, driving his shoulder into Alexander’s chest and pinning him against the wall once more.
The two of them continued to clash as if I weren’t even there. I watched silently for a moment, the sight of
Alexander so desperate and outclassed stirring nothing but cold indifference in me.
Without a word, I turned and walked away.
Behind me, the fighting stopped shortly after. Hunter’s sure strides signaled his approach. “It’s handled,” he
said simply, falling back into step beside me.
A sharp cry from Grace’s treatment room carried down the hallway, but Alexander didn’t stop to check on her
despite the sound. Instead, he stormed off in the other direction. His steps were heavy, his fury radiati
waves.
Sarah and Daniel rounded the corner, their faces pale. Their eyes shifted between Alexander’s retreating figure and the cracks in the wall, confusion and disbelief written all over them.
“What happened here?” Sarah demanded breathlessly.
I didn’t answer. I didn’t even look at her. Hunter and I kept walking.

The car ride to the Shadow Organization’s main building was silent. The tension from the hallway lingered
between us, though neither of us commented on it. The shadows of the passing scenery blurred outside the
window as I let my thoughts drift.
As we pulled up to the imposing structure, Hunter broke the quiet.
“Roman has urgent business,” he inford me as he stepped out of the car. “But he’ll join you for dinner.”
I nodded absentmindedly, stepping out behind him. The cool air brushed against my skin as we entered the building.
Once inside, Hunter pulled out his phone. He moved slightly to the side, though I could still hear his

“Sir,” Hunter began, his tone professional, “there was an incident with Alexander Amber. He confronted Miss
Winters near the sanatorium.”
Hunter paused, listening to Roman’s response on the other end. Though I couldn’t hear it, the tension in Hunter’s stiff posture told me enough.
“He grabbed her,” Hunter continued. “And I intervened.”
Another pause.
“Yes, sir,” Hunter said again. “Sarah Winter’s plot to detain her has also been confirmed.”
Hunter glanced toward me briefly before adding, “Miss Winters handled herself with impressive composure throughout the incident.”
The faintest flicker of a smile crossed his face, barely noticeable. “Yes, I believe that pleases you, sir,” he said, his tone lightening slightly before ending the call.

I spent almost half an hour going over documents in my private office, trying to refocus my thoughts, when
the door suddenly burst open.
Alexander strode in, his expression livid. The door slammed shut behind him, the force rattling the walls.
“Where have you been?” he demanded, his voice loud and sharp.
I didn’t look up immediately, deliberately finishing the line I was reading. Then, I raised my eyes slowly, meeting his glare with deliberate calm.
“You’re going to have to be more specific,” I said, keeping my tone as uninterested as possible.
His fists clenched. “Where have you been, Scarlett?” he spat. “You’ve been ignoring my calls. Vanishing for days. I want answers.”
I leaned back in my chair, crossing my arms. “And if I don’t feel like giving you any?”
His body stiffened, his breathing loud in the otherwise quiet room.
“You’ve been traveling with that Beta,” he continued, his voice lowering with suspicion. “And every time I try to find you, you’re gone. With him. Or that Alpha.”
He took a step closer, his eyes narrowing. “Who are they? What do they want? Are you running some kind of
scheme?”
I raised a brow, unimpressed. “It’s none of your concern.”
“It is my concern!” he barked, slamming his hand onto my desk. “Your entire existence has been my concern since the moment we were engaged. Look at you now! Running a healing empire, living on private land–all funded by what? Dirty money, I’m sure.”
I frowned, finally leaning forward to grade at him directly. “Careful, Alexander,” I warned.
But he didn’t stop. His voice dripped with venom as he took another step forward. “Or is it not money at all? Maybe you’ve been sleeping your way to power. Is that how you’ve managed all this success so quickly?”
The words barely had time to land before I moved.

My hand struck his face with a force that echoed through the room. The sound was sharp and final, cutting
through the tension like a blade.
Alexander staggered back, his head snapping to the side before he crashed into the edge of my desk.
He held his face, his hand trembling as blood trickled from his split lip. The shock in his eyes was almost laughable. He stared at me as if seeing me for the first time, unable to process what had just happened.
