Chapter 13 Get A Divorce
At that moment, Eliza’s words were blocked in her throat, and her mind went completely blank, thinking Carl was awake.
Indeed, Carl was awake, having been listening since Eliza walked in.
He knew about the Thornton family’s affairs and naturally understood that she was the real daughter of the Thornton family. ‘So the Thornton family originally wanted to marry Eliza to me but changed their minds when they found out I became a vegetable.’
He was relieved it was not Eliza who married him instead.
Carl imagined how pitiful Edie must be: abandoned by her adoptive parents, schemed against by Eliza, and betrayed by her boyfriend; anybody could come along and treat her badly.
He thought, ‘If I were awake, I wouldn’t give her a second look.
He had thought Edie was the type to just shrink away when wronged, but then he heard her calling doctors and nurses to check on him while she dealt with Eliza.
She said, “Who was it that couldn’t wait to marry him? And then, when you heard he became a vegetable, you tried to commit suicide to get me to marry him instead. Being a bitch is an art form, and you’ve mastered it like no one else I’ve ever seen.”
Eliza gasped, “You…”
Edie added, “They must be going crazy in the Thornton family residence, huh? Regretting it now that Carl might wake up?”
Eliza gritted her teeth and said, “You think Carl will look favorably upon your slum roots? Once he wakes up, he will divorce you for sure.”
Edie countered, “And don’t forget, you’ve lived in that very slum for over twenty years.”
Eliza sneered, “So what? I am the real daughter of the Thornton family.”
She would inherit everything Edie had ever possessed; she would never spend a day living that way again.
With that, Eliza turned and opened the door, only to be met by Jefferson, who was leaning casually against the doorway.
He slightly lifted his eyelids to look at Eliza, flicked the ashes off his cigarette, and wore a terrifyingly cold expression. Not even the nearby nurse dared to approach and remind him that smoking was prohibited.
Jefferson asked, “Finished?”
Eliza’s face suddenly turned pale. She forced a smile. “Jefferson… what brings you here?”
Jefferson questioned, “What about you? What brings you here?”

“My… My parents sent me to ask Edie to come back for a meal,” Eliza said, her voice. tinged with guilt. “Did you hear everything?”
Jefferson grunted in response, “I’ve been listening since you said slum roots.”
A flicker of panic crossed Eliza’s eyes. “Jefferson… I, I didn’t mean it that way…”
“I’m not deaf,” Jefferson said coldly. “If you look down on the Lane family’s slums, then don’t call me brother. I can’t afford that title.”
With that, he brushed past her without looking at her expression and walked into the
ward.
Edie handed Jefferson the prepared keys. “I’ve been busy lately and can’t help with the
move.”
“No problem.” Jefferson glanced at Carl in bed and asked, “Your husband?”
Edie nodded.
After all, she was his sister, and seeing her married to a vegetative state, he couldn’t help but furrow his brow. “Can you get a divorce?”
Edie couldn’t help but smirk. “No plans to divorce for now; it’s pretty good like this.”
“Actually…” Jefferson wanted to say something else, but he forced himself to stop. Instead, he just said, “Don’t put yourself through any hardships.”
Edie responded and gave Jefferson the address of the apartment.
Jefferson left, and Eliza, unwilling to give up, followed him out. “Jefferson…”
He ignored her completely.
Eliza watched helplessly as Jefferson/got into a car, which drove off, leaving her stranded by the roadside.
She stared at the car’s emblem.
It was a nationally limited edition Humvee from a certain luxury brand.
Eliza’s eyes widened in disbelief. ‘Who is he driving for?‘
A dark thought crossed her mind, but she decided it was best not to concern herself with the Lane family’s affairs anymore.
Determined, she called Violet. “Mom, I went to ask Edie to come home for a meal, but
she refused.”
Violet asked, “Did you tell her we miss her and want her to visit?”
Eliza would never say such a thing; she was only too happy to see Edie at odds with the Thornton family. She pouted and lied, “I did, but she kept insulting me. Now that
the Brooks family is backing her, the insults have gotten really vicious.”
Violet hissed angrily, “That ungrateful wretch! I truly raised her for nothing
