Chapter 6
When I got home, I rushed to the bathroom, showering in cold water to clear my head.
But before dawn, I was running a fever, my body cold as ice,
He never stayed out overnight, but tonight was an exception.
I lay in bed, thinking maybe I should just let myself die from this illness.
Then I heard the door open. Leland was back.
He carefully lay down beside me. Although I didn’t intend to, I caught the scent of his infidelny, gardenias minet with roses.
He didn’t even notice I had a fever.
I forced a smile, but then I heard his steady breathing.
He had never been like this before. Was the difference between love and indifference real this
Before I passed out, I called the housekeeper Lara.
When I opened my eyes again, the smell of disinfectant filled the air, causing me to recoil in feat.
I hated hospitals. My parents and grandparents had all passed away in one.
Even though my stomach issues from not eating after my parents‘ death often flared up, Leland rarely took me to the hospital.
But when I really needed to be hospitalized, he was always by my side. Now, he wasn’t by my bedside.
I told myself I’d get used to it.
I grabbed the IV bag and went to the restroom.
Fumbling, I hung the bag on a hook, but when I stood up, the glass bottle fell and shattered
Blood from the IV tube spilled onto the floor.
My stomach ached again, and I was starving.
Sweat dotted my forehead as the pain forced me to crouch down. The glass shards on the floor stung my senses and I reached out….
The glass shards on the floor got me. I reached out…
The door swung open, and Leland rushed in, pulling the needle from my hand.
“Where’s Lara? I told her not to leave your side! Does it still hurt?”
I felt dizzy as he shook me, managing a weak smile.
He carried me back to the bed, his eyes filled with panic and pain.
He kissed my forehead and pressed on the needle mark, his eyes red with worry
His phone rang again, and he silenced it.
He adjusted my pillow, but the ringing persisted.
I smirked. Was he afraid to answer in front of me?

Just then, Lara walked in with lunch.
“Ms. Perez, you’re awake! That’s good. Oh, I couldn’t find your favorite bread, but Ms. Hoffman gave me hers. It’s mango–flavored. Take it.”
