Chapter 7
“Mango flavor?” I muttered, noticing Leland’s face suddenly change.
He grabbed the item and rushed to the trash can, his anger evident.
“Ms. Hoffman didn’t know Kay is allergic to mango, but Lara, didn’t you know either?” Leland demanded, Lara froze and then quickly apologized, “Oh, I forgot! I’m so sorry, Ms. Perez and Mr. Pearson. I’ll go buy the flavor you like right away.”
“No need, Lara.” I stopped her.“Just give me some cereal.”
Lara looked relieved and nodded, quickly serving the cereal.
Leland’s phone rang again.
I said to him, “If you have something to do, go ahead. I’ll be fine. Lara’s here.”
Leland nodded. “Alright, sorry, I was busy yesterday and didn’t notice you were sick.”
I shook my head understandingly.“It’s fine. I support whatever you think you need to do.”
He paused, a hint of guilt flashed in his eyes as he touched my face.“I won’t be careless next time. Eat something now. I’ve already asked the doctor to come and give you another injection. I’ll be right back. Don’t be scared.”
I nodded.
But as soon as he left, I turned to Lara.“Lara, could you get me some bread? I’m really hungry.” Delighted that I wanted to eat, Lara left quickly.
I leaned against the wall and made my way to the corridor corner, where I overheard Leland and Caitlyn. “Caitlyn, I told you not to show up in front of Kaylie. Do you hear me?” Leland’s voice was filled with anger. “Oh, don’t be so harsh, okay? I just missed you so much. Please, forgive me, considering how I went out of my way to please you last night!” Caitlyn cooed, her hands touching his body.
Caitlyn was pushed away as Leland coldly said, “Stop with the nonsense. Kay is allergic to mango. Everyone in the company knows that!”
“Oh, I forgot! Sorry, but she didn’t eat it, right? Don’t be so mean. You’ll scare the baby,” Caitlyn whined.
“Baby? You’re pregnant?” Leland’s voice was filled with anticipation, piercing my heart once further.
He had once told me he didn’t like children and that I was enough for him.
But now it seemed he just didn’t want children with me.
Was it because he was matrilocal and worried about what surname the child would take?
But no matter what, it would still be our child.
Yet he chose to reject it.
