Chapter 16
The confined space amplified everything.
Rosella was in the corner, being shielded by Luigi. She stood next to him, not sparing a glance at Millard.
Upon entering the elevator, Toby Anderson, Millard’s assistant, saw Rosella.
He couldn’t help by exclaim “Ms. Krueger“, which broke the deadly silence.
Rosella timidly looked up and met Toby’s gaze.
“Ms. Krueger, it really is you!”
When pursuing Millard, Rosella had asked Toby to deliver gifts or messages to Millard quite often. If it wasn’t for her face, which still bore a certain resemblance to the past, he wouldn’t even have recognized her. “When did you come back to Tolville?”
“A few days ago…” she said.
The elevator continued to rise.
It stopped at the twenty–sixth floor.
Luigi interrupted their conversation, “Rosella, this is us.”
Rosella followed him closely like his shadow, while Millard’s gaze was glued to her till the elevator doors closed.
“Mr. Dunn, is that really Ms. Krueger? She’s changed so much. I almost didn’t recognize her.”

Toby kept going on and on, which irritated Millard a lot. He thought, “She’s changed? How? She’s still the same, jumping at every man she sees. She’s still the same facing Elliot and Luigi, only to me, she’s different.
“Luigi can’t be compared to me in any aspect, OK?
“He wants to be with Rosella? What a joke.”
Toby exclaimed, “Her appearance changes a lot, but the most shocking part is she didn’t even talk to you. Remember? She used to be obsessed with you, following you everywhere. What happened?”
Millard said coldly, “I don’t need a stupid admirer who doesn’t know boundaries. It does me no good.”
After a few seconds of silence, Toby said, “But Ms. Krueger’s feelings for you were real. Everyone could tell.”
They reached their floor.
Millard’s tone grew grave. “You don’t get to kill just because you love someone.”
He was talking about Angeline.
Angeline was such a pure, innocent soul. She was kind and friendly, teaching Rosella violin and thinking of Rosella as her own sister. Yet, Rosella paid someone to kidnap her and got her killed.”
No matter how pitiful Rosella seemed, she needed to pay the price of causing Angeline’s tragic death.
Toby stroked the back of his head and followed Millard out quickly. Suddenly, he said, “Mr. Dunn, I’ve interacted with Ms. Krueger a bunch of times. She doesn’t strike me as that kind of person.”

Millard was busy at work, and Toby, his assistant, ought to be meticulous.
He saw with his own eyes that when Rosella was waiting for Millard to get off work, she bought the most expensive kind of cat food to feed stray cats downstairs the building. A woman who was this kind wasn’t a killer.
Back then, the incident caused quite a stir in Tolville. Even after several trials, a verdict still couldn’t be reached. Rumors had it that the Rowe family hired the best lawyers and paid off the two kidnappers to change their confessions, and finally, Rosella was released.
But only the person involved knew the truth.
“Ms. Krueger, do you still have feelings for Mr. Dunn?”
Luigi asked Rosella as soon as they stepped out of the elevator.
Rosella shook her head. So many people had asked her about this, and her answer remained the same.
Luigi was relieved. “Mr. Rowe wants you to work with me. If you need anything, just let me know.”
“OK.”
Luigi had become more mature. He was no longer that clumsy fresh graduate; when he stood in front of her in a suit gracefully, she almost didn’t recognize him.
“Ms. Krueger, I hope you think of me as a friend and tell me whenever you’re in need.”
Rose could tell he meant it.
She said, “I will.”

He continued, looking ashamed, “You helped me a lot. I only found out later that it was you who paid for my mother’s medical bills. But I wasn’t there for you when you needed help.”
She said, “It was nothing, really.”
To her back then, Luigi’s mother’s medical bills amounted to her allowance for a week. With that small amount of money, she saved Luigi’s mother’s life. Because of that, Luigi was grateful to her even till today. He said, “If you need help with anything–anything at all, tell me. I’ll help.”
“Really?”
She had suffered and been lied to so many times that she didn’t dare to believe others‘ kindness.
He nodded vigorously. “Of course.”
“Did Mr. Rowe ask you to marry me?” she asked after pursing her lips, her voice laced with shame.
