Millard found Rosella’s words laughable.
Leaning against the window, he seemed a bit down. The light from outside cast a shadow on his face, obscuring his expression. “It’s their speculation. I never said such things.”
“Then… could you clarify for me?”
Rosella pleaded, “I don’t want Mollie to misunderstand me…”
“Why would I help you?” He exhaled smoke, which swirled in the air. “Have you forgotten? I’m here to torture you.”
That was right.
How could she forget?
The marigolds in the garden were planted in memory of Angeline, who was dead because of her. Millard hadn’t really made a move yet. Once he did, she’d be dead.
How foolish of her–coming here to beg him.
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking.” She stood up to leave.
Yet, he put out the cigarette, lowering his head. “You want my help? Sure.”
She blinked,
He continued, “On one condition–break off the engagement with Luigi.”

His tone was nothing but commanding. “It’s your choice.”
She picked Luigi without hesitation.
Luigi was the one who was genuinely good to her; she wasn’t stupid enough to leave him.
Now that Rosella had moved out, Dewey was the happiest one. He said, “We should have kicked her out sooner. It always bugged me so much when I saw her.”
Millard asked, “Where did she go?”
“Where could she go? She’s got no money or connections. Now that Luigi is out of town, she couldn’t go to the office either,” Dewey sneered. “You know, I’m actually surprised. She’s quite tough; but what’s the use of that?”
Mollie gave Rosella some money, but she left it behind quietly.
With the money she had, she could only afford the cheapest shared apartment. Yet, she was content enough because anything was better than a basement or a leaky attic. She felt lucky enough just to be alive.
“Luigi is on a business trip, right?” With a word from Millard, she’d suffer endlessly. Perhaps wanting her to realize how wrong her choice was, he continued, “Keep him delayed. The longer the better.”
“Why?”
“I wanna see if she’s gonna regret her choice without him.”
Because of Millard’s orders, Rosella could hardly make a living in Tolville, and even though Mollie wanted to help, there was nothing she could do. Fiddling with a cigarette, Dewey said, “Do you know? She couldn’t get a decent job and has become someone’s maid.”

It broke Mollie’s heart, but Lamont said coldly, “If others can do it, so can she. She’s not better than them.”
The two had a big row because of this.
“Who’s her employer?” Millard looked up, slightly surprised.
“There are a bunch of them. She takes turns.” Dewey didn’t know much either. “By the way, Jillian and the others have been making things difficult for her.”
Lorena drugged Millard, but Rosella ended up suffering. She never complained or defended herself.
One day, she got off work, and Jillian and the others blocked her way.
They snatched her bag away. Leaning against her sports car, Jillian tossed the bag back and forth with the others. Rosella lunged for it, but it was tossed to someone else before she could even touch it.
She stood in the middle being bullied with a pale face.
After Jillian had enough fun, she upended the bag, scattered everything inside across the ground, and drove her car over them. Rosella’s phone was broken, and the bread–her dinner–was stained.
She crouched down to pick up her stuff pitifully like a stray cat scavenging through trash.
Just as she was about to pick up her broken phone, someone kicked it, sending it flying.
There was new frostbite on her hands, coupled with scars left from doing chores. Blood had already seeped out of the band–aids, but she didn’t have time to change them.

She looked up, only to meet Millard’s eyes. Instantly, she panicked and had the urge to flee right away.
“Are you having fun?” Millard found her so stupid, not making the right choice. “You let them bully you like a fool and live like a beggar. Where’s your dear Luigi now?”
She was about to pick up her key when he stepped on her hand. The rough sole of his shoe ground into her skin, causing a sharp pain.
“You wanna get married and be happy? You don’t get to.”
Her palm was pressed against the ground, and the key nearly pierced her skin. Tears streamed down her cheeks, but she bit her lip, refusing to beg for his mercy. He exerted more force on his foot, almost breaking her bones. “Answer me again. Are you gonna break off the engagement or not?”
