“What did you say?“.
Alexander stormed toward me, grabbing my shoulders, completely stunned.
I gave him the same condescending look he’d just given me, the corner of my mouth lifting ever so slightly.
“I said… I had the baby terminated.”
His eyes went wide. His lips trembled.
“No… no way. You’re lying!”
“This is just another one of your sick tricks to push me into a divorce!”
“Emily, don’t you dare!”
I stared straight into his eyes, refusing to let him look away.
“Alexander, you’re the one who said it.“.
“That even with the baby, I still wasn’t as important to you as Chloe.”
“Did you forget?”
Then I grabbed his hand and pressed it to my abdomen.
“There’s no heartbeat here anymore.”
He yanked his hand back like he’d touched fire, eyes turning red with panic.
“No… no… this can’t be happening.
My parents finally snapped out of their shock,

“You ungrateful brat!”
“Without that baby, how are you supposed to marry into the Montgomery family?!”
“I should’ve never given birth to you! You owe me my grandson!”
My dad’s face turned stone–cold, his glare full of hatred.
“You filthy disgrace! Get the hell out of my house. From now on, I have no daughter.”
I touched my swollen cheek and said calmly,
“Perfect. Because I want nothing to do with parents who’d sell their daughter for a last
name.”
Before I left, I turned to Chloe.
“This wedding dress? I tried it on before
“It didn’t suit me, so I left it.”

Chloe clenched her jaw, glaring at me with pure venom, but I didn’t even flinch.
As the front door slammed shut behind me, Alexander snapped out of it and stormed off.
Only my parents were left behind, crying, screaming, and regretting the fact that they’d just lost the daughter who could’ve become Mrs. Montgomery.
I got into the cab and finally broke down.
I’ve always been the tough one, ever since I was a kid.
When Alexander walked out of our wedding with Chloe on his arm, I didn’t cry.
When Mrs. Montgomery humiliated me in public, I swallowed it.
But today–when my parents tried to sell me off like I was nothing–I finally cracked.
Right there, in front of a stranger, I cried like I never had before.

The cab driver glanced at me in the rearview mirror, concerned.
“You okay, miss?”
I sniffled, my tears falling nonstop.
“I’m fine. I just… need a moment to cry.”
He handed me a box of tissues from the front seat and kept driving while talking softly.
“I don’t know what happened, but listen… life will knock you down.”
“A lot. It’ll break you, disappoint you, crush your soul sometimes.”
“But no matter how bad it gets, you gotta believe it always gets better.”
There was something so raw and full of life in the way he said it, I actually stopped crying
for a second.
I wiped my eyes and asked, my voice hoarse,
“Who said that?”
He chuckled.
“Some writer. My wife used to love her–goes by Echo.”
I laughed a little too.
“You’re right. It’ll get better eventually.”
