Due to the rain, his vision was hazy, and Kendrick couldn’t make out the license plate. Before he could, the car drove off.
Valerie hurried after him. “Kendrick, what’s the matter?”
Kendrick pulled his gaze back.
Valerie held an umbrella in her delicate hands.
Concerned that he might get soaked, she held the entire umbrella above his head, leaving herself exposed to the rain.
For an instant, Kendrick thought he saw Talia’s silhouette in Valerie.
Talia had seemingly done such a foolish thing before.
Kendrick shook his head, thinking, “I don’t love Talia. Why on earth was I thinking of her all of a sudden?”
Noticing Valerie shivering from the cold, he took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders.
Valerie murmured softly, “When Talia left, she seemed so resolute. She doesn’t really want to call off the engagement with you, does she?”
“Of course not. That’s impossible,” Kendrick said, gripping Valerie’s shoulder.
“She can’t bring herself to leave me. Isn’t she just going to great lengths to get my attention?”

“But she really seemed furious tonight.” Valerie pursed her lips. “Why don’t you give her a call and find out where she’s gone?”
Kendrick waved his hand dismissively. “There’s no point in fretting over this. Once she comes to her senses, she’ll surely apologize to me on her own.”
Kendrick had never been the one to initiate a call to Talia.
Throughout their relationship, it was always Talia who took the first step.
Regardless of who was at fault in any given situation, she was the one who would offer an apology.
If Talia was upset for a day or two over something trivial, she would inevitably reach out to reconcile with him.
Kendrick had grown accustomed to this pattern.

The weather was gloomy and overcast.
Outside the window, a thunderstorm raged, as if the sky had been torn asunder.
Gavin gazed at the unconscious Talia lying on the bed and murmured softly, “Ms. Taylor has suffered a concussion. The doctor said she needs to be kept under observation in the hospital for another two days.”
Kayson’s jaw muscles tensed, and he remained silent. His eyes fixed on Talia’s ankles.
Gavin stole a quick glance, then lowered his head and

continued to relay the doctor’s words, “She was hurt by a porcelain shard here. Since the treatment was delayed, the scar might not be completely removed, but fortunately, the bones are unharmed.”
Kayson’s thin lips curled slightly. There was no discernible emotion in his deep eyes, yet one could sense the cold aura emanating from his body.
Talia lay on the bed in a pitiful state. Although her soaked clothes had been changed, her overly slender frame made her lack the vitality that a young girl should have.
There was even a slap mark on her face. It stood out starkly against her overly pale face.
Kayson thought to himself, “That must be hurt.”
Kayson took out a cigarette from his pocket, placed it obliquely between his lips, and was about to light it.
But, worried about choking Talia, he put the cigarette away.
“Mr. Norton is still waiting for you,” Gavin checked the time. and gently reminded, “It’s getting rather late. If we don’t hurry over now, the party will be over.”
“Whatever. I’m not going.”
Kayson sat down beside the bed. “I’m staying here tonight. I’m not going anywhere.”
Gavin’s eyes flickered, and he was about to say something when Kayson’s phone rang.
Noticing that Talia wasn’t sleeping peacefully in bed, Kayson picked up his phone and went to the corridor to answer it.

Immediately, Tyson’s boisterous voice came through the line, “Kayson, how could you do this? You just left without telling us! We thought you were bewitched by some woman.”
Kayson’s lips curled slightly. “Well, I have been bewitched by a woman. Are you jealous?”
“What on earth are you daydreaming about?”
Tyson laughed and held the phone, teasing, “You think a few years in the army means the country will serve you a wife? Kayson, wake up. It’s pouring tonight, but don’t let that cloud your judgment.”
Kayson stuck a cigarette sideways at the corner of his mouth and didn’t say a word.
He and Tyson had grown up together. Otherwise, Tyson wouldn’t have dared to make fun of him like this.

“Come on over now. We’re waiting for you.” Tyson urged, “Oh, by the way, your nephew is here too.”
Kayson’s eyes suddenly narrowed menacingly. “Kendrick?”
“Yeah. We all know about the Taylor family drama tonight. Your nephew’s got a tough mindset. Even after all that, he still felt like coming here to drink.”
A shadow flitted across Kayson’s eyes. He curled his lips, yet there was no trace of a smile; only a chilling coldness.
“Hold on. I’ll be there shortly.”
