CHAPTER 84
ARIA’S POV
As we arrive at the hospital, Adam is swiftly taken away for treatment, his injuries more severe than mine. I’m left feeling a mixture of relief and guilt–relief that he acted so selflessly to protect me, yet burdened by the weight of knowing he’s now suffering because of it. If he hadn’t intervened, it could have been me lying in that hospital bed, fighting for my life.
The hospital room fills with the presence of the Millers, a sudden convergence of family amidst the chaos. Even Grandpa, whose health had been a source of concern, is here, stable and present.
As I take in the scene, it dawns on me that the unsettling feeling I had experienced at the party wasn’t about Grandpa’s well–being or anyone else’s, but it was an ominous premonition about Adam and me.
“You! It’s all because of you!”
Eva’s entrance into the room is sudden and tumultuous, her voice echoing with accusation as she directs her anger towards me. Adam, lying in a comatose state, is the center of attention, but Eva’s accusations pierce through the solemn atmosphere like daggers.
“You should be the one in this place, not him!”
Eva’s tears seem genuine, but I can’t shake the feeling that beneath her sorrow lies a deeper motive. Her tears could be a façade, a tool to undermine me once again in front of everyone, just as she has done countless times before.
Eva’s comment raises suspicions. How could she know that I should have been the one in Adam’s place? It’s as if she’s implying something more sinister, suggesting she might have had a hand in the accident.
“Eva! How dare you speak like this about my daughter–in–law!”
Grandpa’s intervention halts Eva’s accusations in their tracks. It dawns on me that perhaps Grandpa is unaware of my divorce from Adam. Eva’s sudden embarrassment, as she bows her head in shame, hints at the unspoken truth that I’m no longer part of the family through marriage.
Elodie’s eyes widen in shock at Grandpa’s fury and Eva’s outburst. The room’s tension thickens as everyone processes the gravity of the situation.
Just as I am about to explain everything to the Millers, Adam’s eyes flutter open. He makes a valiant effort to speak and move, his presence immediately shifting the room’s focus. All eyes turn to him, a mix of relief and anxiety washing over everyone.
I slip out of the room to make a call to my assistant. My hands shake as I dial, thinking about everything that has happened.
When the line connects, I keep my voice low.
“I need you to investigate my car. Check the brakes and give me a full report on the cause of the accident.”
Mario, on the other end, promises to get back to me soon. I end the call, trying to calm my nerve could have sabotaged my car and why now?

I return to the room after finishing my call, finding it surprisingly empty. The atmosphere is much calmer now, without the tension and chaos that accompanied Eva’s outburst.
The lingering scent of antiseptic fills the air, a great contrast to the emotional turmoil that had engulfed the room just moments ago.

Amidst the quietness of the room, Adam’s gaze fixes upon me, his eyes seemingly holding a depth of emotion.
“What happened?”
I ask Adam and he replies meekly that he is happy at least I am fine.
“I’m just grateful you’re okay, Aria. I was scared…”
His words carry a mixture of relief and concern, his eyes conveying a sense of reassurance even in his weakened state, while guilt is gnawing at me for Eva is right; I should have been in his place.
I approach him, but not touching him. I want to maintain my distance. Thankfully, he is able to talk and he is in a stable state.
“Aria… Grandpa doesn’t know about us. Can we please let it remain in this way?”
Adam urges me not to tell Grandpa anything about our divorce, practically pleading with me to keep it a secret, because if he learns about us, then he may not be able to digest the news, due to his health condition.
Since I owe him for saving my life, I reassure him that I’ll not do anything like this to endanger Grandpa’s life. Adam smiles faintly in gratitude, but then, he makes another shocking request.
“Please, Aria. Stay with me. I need you by my side. Only your care can make me feel better.”
Despite his injuries, Adam manages to summon the energy to deliver romantic lines in an attempt to persuade me to reconcile with him. But this is not what want. I have to keep my distance and not get too involved with Adam, lest I lose control of myself.
The smile and hope on Adam’s fades when I react to his plea.
“I’ll arrange for a someone to take care of you, Adam. Don’t worry.”
